Chapter 15 Caroline
Chapter 15 Caroline
Sedna didn't know the cause of Carole's death, and neither did her own people.
All they knew was that Caroline was the first Melosin to leave Haimo Village with Navelette, and that she was his first and last secretary.
Since her death, Navelette has never hired a new secretary, even when Melusin volunteered. She would only ask them for help occasionally, but she was never as close to them as she was to Caroline.
Chloe had a feeling that there was a less-than-pleasant story behind this.
But how should she bring it up?
Although they seem very close now, perhaps this is just wishful thinking on her part. Maybe the inhuman judge doesn't understand what distance is, which is why he's so close to her.
Thinking about this made Chloe feel a little sad.
My mind was a complete mess, and I couldn't even work properly.
When she absentmindedly handed Navelette a completely unrelated document, the man couldn't help but look up at her in confusion.
Just then, Chloe was looking down, pondering whether or not to ask, when her eyes met those light purple ones.
Although her vertical pupils gave her an aloof and eccentric air, Violet's gentle tone compensated for this feeling, giving her a unique charm.
He frowned slightly, looking quite worried: "Miss Chloe, you seem troubled by something. Could you tell me?"
Somehow, Chloe was persuaded to tell everything.
"I see—" Navelette murmured. "If you want to know about Caroline, you can just ask me. Although I won't bring it up on my own initiative, if you want to know..."
Chloe's heart skipped a beat at the intimate tone, but before she could fully savor the sweetness of the words, Violet continued, "Actually, this matter was already public knowledge, but because so much time has passed, not many people remember it."
So it wasn't because she wanted to know that she was willing to tell me...?
Chloe felt a pang of sadness, but she still pricked up her ears, ready to listen to Villette recount that past event.
"Five hundred years ago, when I first came to Fontaine, she was with me. I arranged for her to work with me as my secretary in the Mo Mang Palace, to integrate into human life together."
"However, the duties of the Supreme Judge have touched the interests of some old nobles. They stirred up a storm in an attempt to shake my position, and they chose Melsin Caroline, who has been with me the longest and is also an outsider, as their target."
"Carole was unaware of the intricacies involved and only thought that she was a burden to me. In order to prevent me from being dragged into this any further, she chose to commit suicide."
Navelette's tone was normal, as if he had already let it go, but Chloe knew that gentle as he was, he must be feeling guilty about this all the time.
Her intuition was correct.
Where she couldn't see, a faint look of bewilderment appeared in Violet's eyes.
"Ms. Chloe, you are human too. Can you tell me if you sometimes feel repulsed when you are facing me?" he asked in a low voice.
Chloe's actions were his response—
She reached out and placed her hands on Navelette's hands reassuringly.
The girl's hands were soft and small, and no matter how you looked at them, they couldn't compare to Villette's hands. But the owner of the hands still stubbornly tried to wrap his hands around hers, wanting to convey her goodwill in this way.
Chloe smiled broadly, her eyes crinkling: "Not at all~"
"You see, I can get along with you without any reservations. Because in my eyes, you are you, an independent individual—whether you are human or of another race, you are my beloved Lady Navelette."
Although she had always hesitated because of his status as the Supreme Judge, she now understood that Villette was not someone who cared about such things, and she no longer needed to restrain herself.
Navelette looked stunned, as if her brain had gone blank because of her sudden action and comforting words, and it took her several seconds to react.
Thump, thump...
It looked like something was jumping very fast.
Longlong, still only vaguely understanding human emotions, looked at Chloe blankly: "Ms. Chloe, is it your heart beating?"
Chloe's heart was naturally beating very fast.
After all, she had said such cheesy things in front of the person in question. She didn't know whether to feel ashamed or embarrassed, but her heart was pounding.
When Navelette asked her that question, Chloe couldn't keep her composure any longer. She quickly let go and slunk back to her small desk in the other corner of the room.
Her face was still flushed, but she pretended to tidy up the messy documents on the table, trying to calm her turbulent emotions.
But after she walked away, Violet heard the chaotic heartbeat becoming clearer and clearer.
He leaned back in his chair, clutching his chest, and belatedly realized that the voice he had heard at the beginning seemed to have come from himself.
Even though he had bought so many books about human emotions, it seemed like none of them had ever taught him what it meant.
Was it because he held hands with Chloe?
But when they first met, Chloe took him to her house to take shelter from the rain, and they held hands, but he didn't feel anything like that then...
Maybe there is.
Was that the reason for that momentary lapse in concentration?
Navelette couldn't understand it.
He wasn't a meticulous person, especially since it was work time. After racking his brains without finding an answer, he decided to temporarily give up thinking about the problem.
He thought he'd ask Ms. Chloe after get off work.
So Chloe, who thought the matter was over, was once again attacked by the Supreme Judge after get off work.
"Huh?" She stared blankly, her mouth agape.
Navelette, thinking she hadn't heard her clearly, repeated, "Ms. Chloe, I'd like to know if you feel your heart race when you hold my hand?"

Hehe, although it's a bit short, it's concise and to the point (awkwardly scratching his head).
