Chapter 72 Successfully Escaped?
Chapter 72 Successfully Escaped?
In the dimly lit passage, wooden planks partitioned off temporary rooms, and Suren moved quickly forward along the passage.
However, he hadn't taken two steps when he ran into Kayla, who had just left.
Suren didn't panic. Instead, she showed a delighted expression and tried her best to act like a shy newcomer. She asked somewhat embarrassedly, "Um... excuse me, how do I get to the exit? I feel a bit stuffy in my chest here and want to get some fresh air."
Suren, of course, didn't know exactly how many exits there were; he was just guessing. After all, underground organizations like this usually had an emergency exit. If there wasn't one, he could simply use his newbie status as an excuse.
Kayla looked at the somewhat shy newcomer, pointed to a corridor, gave her a gentle smile, and said softly, "Just keep going that way. Remember not to stay outside for too long; these are special times."
"Thank you!" Suren pressed his hand to his chest and bowed. From his observation, the "Eternal Oath Knights" seemed to place great importance on etiquette, unlike an underground organization, and more like a fallen family.
Kayla returned the curtsy, then walked down the corridor in the direction Suren had come from.
The footsteps faded into the distance. Suren stopped and quickened his pace, but instead of heading towards the exit, he went in the direction Kayla had come from.
According to Suren's calculations, he had less than 40 seconds left, which prompted him to quicken his pace, almost running.
Fortunately, the basement wasn't very big, and soon a red wooden door appeared in Suren's eyes—exactly the same one he had seen in the Revelation.
Suren quickly stepped forward and gently touched the wooden door. The door was unlocked, and he easily pushed it open.
The room was small. On the left side was a square table with an oil lamp on it. A man wearing rough gray leather armor sat in a chair next to the table.
The rest of the room had several shelves, mostly filled with books or files, as well as some locked boxes.
The man sitting in the chair looked up at the newcomer in front of him and asked in confusion, "What's wrong?"
"Oh, it's nothing. Miss Sterling asked me to switch shifts with you in case you doze off." Suren smiled and walked towards the other person, while "Ellie's Tear" on his neck swayed gently.
Why would Miss Sterling let a newcomer like you take over her shift?
The man frowned, preparing to stand up. Suren moved even faster; he raised his right wrist and flicked out a silk thread with an iron plate tied to its tip, striking the man precisely. At the same time, the silk thread glowed with a green light, which flowed along the thread, into the iron plate, and then into the man's body.
Suren's movements were so fast that the man couldn't react. Then, a great sense of calm enveloped him. He felt his eyelids become incredibly heavy, and then he was overcome by sleepiness, leaning back in his chair and falling into a deep sleep.
Suren exhaled, took out his pocket watch, and opened the cover—five minutes had passed.
He wasted no more time and strode to the shelf where the two books were, putting the two books and a few other items belonging to Charles into his ring.
He also casually swept a few documents from the shelf into his ring. As for the other supplies, he didn't touch them; after all, he would still have to deal with the other party in the future, and there was no need to be too ruthless. Most importantly, the man from earlier would wake up soon, and members of the "Eternal Oath Knights" could arrive at any time, so Suren couldn't afford to waste any more time.
After doing all this, Suren opened the red door and quickly walked down the corridor toward the exit that Kayla had told her about earlier.
Whether it was due to Suren's good luck or the fact that the people of the "Eternal Oath" didn't like to be active, Suren arrived at the exit that Kayla had pointed out without any trouble.
This was a relatively narrow passage, with wooden partitions on both sides. Suren kept his head down and jogged all the way to a staircase.
After walking up the stairs, Suren came to a relatively dimly lit room. Opposite her was a half-open wooden door, through which moonlight shone.
What gave Suren a headache was that a man was standing by the wooden door. He was wearing the same gray leather armor as the guy in the storage room earlier.
Suren walked towards the man with her head down. Because the light was too dim, the man couldn't see Suren's face clearly. Seeing Suren walking quickly towards him, he called out, asking with a hint of warning, "Hey, where are you going so late?"
"It's nothing, it's just too stuffy, I need some fresh air." Suren didn't stop walking, replying in a low voice as she went.
Hearing Suren's answer, the guard frowned. He reached out to stop Suren and asked with some doubt, "I've never heard this voice before. Look up..."
Before he could finish speaking, Suren raised his head, staring at the unfamiliar face with black hair and brown eyes. The guard's pupils constricted sharply. Before he could react, Suren's right fist was already swinging, a fist slowly enlarging in the guard's eyes. In an instant, he lost consciousness.
Seeing the guard lying asleep on the ground, Suren didn't linger and pushed open the door.
He certainly didn't have that much strength; the effect of that punch was entirely due to "Ellie's Tears".
Outside the door was a narrow alley with mottled brick walls on both sides. The alley was filled with that familiar stench of decay. Suren didn't linger; he started running as fast as he could.
At the same time, the "Ring of Mandara" in his hand emitted a light, and a blur flashed by as Suren was already dressed in the uniform of the Deathbird.
With only the whistling wind in his ears, Suren jogged along, turning and twisting through the alleys, and had already reached a point three blocks away.
Suren leaned against the wall, his chest rising and falling slightly. He looked at the ring on his left hand, a smile playing on his lips.
Things went even more smoothly than he had imagined. He didn't even need to use his backup plan. He was lucky that the woman dressed as a wandering knight wasn't there today, which allowed him to escape easily.
"Caw!"
Suddenly, a sound startled Suren awake. He looked up at the sky.
At this moment, a crescent moon was already hanging in the sky, and a dark figure swept across the night sky.
That's...that raven!
Suren's pupils contracted slightly, a sense of foreboding washing over him. He jerked to the side, but was a beat too slow. A black light flashed past, and Suren felt a sharp pain in his shoulder.
He forced back quickly despite the pain, glancing at his shoulder as he saw that his uniform had been ripped, leaving a finger-length wound from which black blood was flowing and emitting a foul stench.
Without further hesitation, Suren channeled "Source of Knowledge" into "Ellie's Tear." A flash of green light appeared, black blood was squeezed out, and the wound began to heal at a visible speed.
"You lackey of the church, hand over what you've stolen, and I might let you die a quicker death."
A cold voice rang out in the alley, its tone as chilling as the wind.
Suren recognized the voice as that of a white-haired girl. His gaze swept across the alley, but he couldn't catch a glimpse of her.
Suren licked her lips; things were getting interesting.
