The will to survive overwhelmed everything. To live, one had to kill the person who wanted him dead.
As Chu Hang rushed out, he was already kneeling on the ground, raising his gun, aiming, and firing. The series of movements was incredibly fast.
"Da da da!"
The MP40 submachine gun roared again. He ignored the scurries hiding behind cover, his mind instantly pinpointing the biggest threat—an MG42 machine gun that had just been set up to his flank. If that thing opened fire, they would all be finished.
Chu Hang pressed down hard on the muzzle and emptied an entire magazine of bullets at the target.
A hail of bullets drew a deathly line as the Hydra machine gunner's chest erupted in several sprays of blood before he fell backward. His assistant gunner, also wounded, clutched his leg and howled on the ground.
He immediately rolled away, dodging the bullet fired from the side. The bullet grazed his scalp, bringing a surge of excitement mixed with fear.
Just as Chu Hang was tumbling, Captain America moved.
He leaped out of the crater, bracing himself against the star shield, and charged into the hail of bullets.
That was the only thought in Chu Hang's mind. He was just going to charge into that barrage of gunfire from dozens of guns?
The next second, Chu Hang realized he was wrong.
Captain America's charge path zigzags left and right, always managing to dodge the densest barrage of bullets. Most bullets are deflected by the shield, making a crisp "clanging" sound, leaving not even a mark. That's the vibranium shield.
Occasionally, a few bullets would hit him, but they would only make him stagger and could not stop him at all.
This is a super soldier, a humanoid weapon.
Chu Hang felt his blood boiling. This was it! The ability he had always dreamed of!
"To the left! The one with the rocket launcher!"
Out of the corner of his eye, Chu Hang saw a guy in the woods to his left carrying a dark iron pipe, aiming it at Captain America. The tip of the pipe was gleaming with a blue light; it was a Hydra energy weapon.
If that hits him, even if he's made of iron, he'll still lose a layer of skin.
Chu Hang raised his hand and fired a shot.
The distance was too far; the bullet only hit the tree trunk, exploding into a cloud of sawdust.
Captain America, charging forward, seemed to have eyes in the back of his head. The instant Chu Hang fired his gun, he swiftly raised his left hand, and the shield flew from his grasp!
"call out--!"
The shield, spinning horribly, didn't fly towards the rocket launcher operator, but instead smashed into a rock about a person's height next to him.
The shield bounced off at an odd angle and hit the rocket launcher operator squarely on the head.
With a muffled "thud," the guy collapsed without uttering a sound.
The shield arced through the air before flying steadily back into Captain America's hand. He caught it without even stopping.
Beautiful! Absolutely fucking beautiful!
Chu Hang inwardly cheered. He fired only one warning shot, and Captain America instantly understood and resolved the threat in the most effective way.
This feeling is so good.
With Chu Hang providing fire support and observation from the flank, Captain America charged straight into Hydra's lines and unleashed a massacre.
He parried with his shield, then struck his enemies' throats and joints with the edge of the shield. His punches and kicks carried immense force; those hit head-on were sent flying, their bones broken.
Chu Hang's mission became simple: use his positional advantage to provide suppressive fire for Captain America and locate any stragglers who attempted a surprise attack.
A tacit understanding had formed between them without words.
With a short burst of fire, Chu Hang could signal to Captain America that someone was about to throw a grenade from behind the rock at three o'clock. And Captain America could always react the instant Chu Hang fired, throwing his shield and sending the unfortunate guy and his grenade flying into the air together.
One is the main attacker, and the other is the support.
The rhythm of the battle was completely controlled by the two of them.
The Hydra soldiers finally broke down. Their bullets couldn't penetrate that damned shield, and their flanking maneuvers were always thwarted by bullets coming from who-knows-where.
Panic spread among them.
It's unclear who first let out a strange cry, dropped their gun, and turned to run. This action toppled the first domino, and the remaining soldiers completely lost their will to fight, crying out and scattering in all directions.
The battle is over.
All that remained on the riverbank was the sound of the wind, the smell of blood, and a pile of corpses.
Chu Hang leaned against a tree, almost collapsing from exhaustion. He was panting heavily, the barrel of his MP40 so hot it could fry an egg.
He looked at the tall figure not far away, also leaning on his knees and panting, and felt a sense of unreality.
Is this...a win?
At that moment, the man moved.
Captain America slowly straightened up, slung his shield behind his back, and walked step by step toward Chu Hang. His steps were steady, but wary.
Chu Hang subconsciously raised his submachine gun, which had been fired without firing, with the muzzle slightly lowered to indicate that he meant no harm.
"Don't be nervous, soldier." Captain America's voice was a little hoarse, but still calm. "The battle is over. I am not your enemy."
He walked a few meters away from Chu Hang and stopped. His gaze swept over Chu Hang's ill-fitting Hydra uniform, then passed over him and looked at Gabe behind him.
"Are you members of the Howling Commandos?" he asked.
"Yes, sir!" Chu Hang instinctively stood at attention and answered.
Captain America's gaze returned to Chu Hang's face, his blue eyes filled with inquiry and a hint of approval.
"What's your name, soldier?"
"Chu Hang, sir! From Company D!"
"Chu Hang..." Captain America murmured in a somewhat stiff tone, then revealed a tired but sincere smile.
“You did a good job, Chu Hang. Very good.” He paused, then added in a more serious tone, “I haven’t seen a soldier as excellent as you in a long time. Welcome to this war, soldier.”
Chapter 20 is ready! Now!
To be honest, being praised like that by Captain America to his face greatly satisfied Chu Hang's little bit of vanity. This wasn't just some random compliment; this was Captain America! A living, breathing, and capable man! And the Captain America who had just fought alongside him!
That feeling is exactly the same as when you were in school, racking your brains to solve a math problem that you thought was really difficult, only to have the top student in the whole school come over, pat you on the shoulder, and say, "Dude, your solution is awesome."
Awesome! Absolutely awesome!
Chu Hang even had a fleeting impulse to pull out a notebook and ask the other party to sign it. But his remaining rationality told him that they were on a battlefield, and doing so would likely result in him being mistaken for a madman sent by Hydra and killed with a shield.
He forced down his excitement, trying to appear more like a seasoned veteran than a fanatical fan meeting his idol. He mimicked the tough guys in movies, merely offering a slight smirk in response, before turning his gaze to Gabe behind him.
"Sir, my teammate is seriously injured," Chu Hang said in a deep voice, steer the conversation back to business. Now was not the time for reminiscing; survival was the top priority.
Captain America's smile vanished instantly, replaced by a serious concern. Without the slightest hesitation, he strode over and knelt beside Gabe.
He first glanced at Gabu's face, which was as pale as paper from blood loss and cold, then his gaze moved down to Gabu's thigh, which Chu Hang had hastily bandaged. When he saw the gruesome wound and the deep cut that exposed bone, even he couldn't help but furrow his brow.
"A bear trap?" Steve's voice held a hint of anger. Only those ruthless Hydra members would set up such a vicious contraption in a place like this.
“Yes, sir,” Chu Hang replied. “We got separated when we parachuted, and he was unlucky enough to step on it when he landed.”
Steve reached out and gently touched Gabe's neck, checking his pulse. He then examined Gabe's eyes, his expression growing increasingly serious. "He's lost too much blood and is showing signs of hypothermia. He needs immediate professional treatment, or he won't last much longer."
As he spoke, he stood up and glanced around, seemingly quickly assessing his next course of action.
But at this very moment!
"Crack-!"
A sharp splash suddenly came from the river not far away!
Chu Hang and Steve tensed up instantly, turning their heads almost simultaneously in the direction from which the sound came!
In the icy cold river, a figure, soaking wet and resembling a water ghost, was seen swaying as it stood up!
It's that "hunting dog"!
He's not dead!
The close-range explosion of C4 explosives didn't even kill him!
At this moment, he looked utterly wretched. His black combat uniform was torn to shreds, his face and hands were covered in blood, and jagged wounds stretched out, making him look like a demon crawling out of hell. One of his arms was twisted unnaturally, clearly broken, but in his other hand, he still gripped a gleaming combat knife tightly!
He didn't look at Chu Hang, or even at the severely injured Gabe. His eyes, bloodshot with anger and pain, were like two burning embers, fixed intently on Captain America!
In his eyes, Chu Hang was just a nobody, a fly that would shoot in the dark. The man in the Stars and Stripes uniform before him, however, was the biggest target on his mission list, the culprit who had ruined his perfect hunt!
"You...damn it!"
A low, beast-like growl escaped from "Hound's" throat. Ignoring his injuries, he used his intact leg to slam into the ground, charging straight at Captain America like a raging bull!
This guy is crazy!
Steve's reaction was incredibly fast. Almost the instant the other party moved, he shielded Chu Hang and Gabe behind him, and at the same time, he raised his left arm, and the indestructible vibranium shield was firmly in front of him.
"clang--!"
The saber slammed into the shield, sending up a burst of blinding sparks!
The immense force caused Steve's body to sway slightly. He could clearly sense that the opponent's strength was far beyond that of an ordinary soldier. This guy had likely undergone some form of human enhancement!
When his first strike missed, "The Hound's" attacks came like a relentless storm. He completely abandoned defense, every move a desperate, life-or-death struggle. The military knife in his hand traced cunning and deadly trajectories, stabbing, slashing, and parrying, each move aimed at Steve's neck, eyes, and heart—vital points!
Steve, however, remained as steady as a mountain. His shield was like an insurmountable wall, blocking every single attack, no matter how fierce. The clash of metal against metal was deafening, sparks flying, a breathtaking spectacle.
Chu Hang watched from the side, his palms sweating profusely.
This is a true clash of top masters! Speed, strength, and skill are all indispensable! Although I have the power of self-healing, compared to these two monsters, I am like a baby who has just learned to walk in terms of combat experience and skill.
At that moment, a voice that only he could hear suddenly rang in his mind.
"Cooldown time is over, [Super Copier] is ready."
Chu Hang's heart skipped a beat!
He had been waiting for this moment for far too long! From the moment he saw Captain America in the promotional video, he had been looking forward to this day every single moment!
His gaze was fixed on the two people engaged in fierce combat, and his brain was working at an unprecedented speed.
An opportunity! He needed an opportunity! An opportunity that would allow him to touch Captain America openly and without arousing any suspicion!
Should I rush in to help? No way! With my current strength, getting involved in a battle of this level would be tantamount to suicide; it would be too deliberate.
Waiting for them to both be severely injured? That won't do either! What if something happens to Captain America? Who will we complain to then?
