Chapter 35 Practical Assessment
Chapter 35 Practical Assessment
"Assessment!"
"Didn't we already pass the test?" Uchiha Yohei asked, his face full of questions.
"That's the Ninja Academy's assessment, not mine. If you can't pass my assessment, then I'll have to send you back to the academy," Yamaguchi Seisuke said in a businesslike manner, showing no mercy.
"Oh, how could this be!" Yangping was speechless.
Taiichi knew that every year, newly graduated genin teams would be tested by their team leaders. The purpose of the tests varied, and the forms were also diverse, mainly depending on the preferences of the team leader. For example, Naruto's future Team 7 was tested on stealing bells, the purpose of which was to test the bond between teammates.
"Now I'll explain the assessment method: Before sunset today, no matter what method you use—ninjutsu, taijutsu, even shuriken—as long as you can hit me once, you'll pass." He then looked up at the setting sun. "There are about two hours left until sunset, so make the most of your opportunity."
After hearing about the assessment method, the three exchanged glances, as if they had made a decision, everything understood without words.
"Captain Yamaguchi, this isn't fair. You're a Jonin, and we're just Genin. How can we possibly win?" Yangping stepped forward first and asked, looking completely carefree.
"Do you think the enemy will treat you fairly on the battlefield?" Captain Yamaguchi retorted bluntly. "As a ninja, you..."
Before he could finish speaking, Taiichi suddenly sprang up and rushed toward Captain Yamaguchi, who was still answering. His gleaming short sword slashed mercilessly toward Captain Yamaguchi's neck, as if he had a life-or-death feud with him.
Captain Yamaguchi, as expected of a veteran Jonin, reacted with lightning speed. He reached into his ninja tool pouch, pulled out a kunai, and narrowly blocked Taichi's attack.
But Taiichi was no pushover either. He wielded his short sword with impenetrable speed, giving Captain Yamaguchi no chance to breathe. By seizing the initiative through a sneak attack, he was temporarily putting Captain Yamaguchi on the defensive.
Just then, a shout of "Lightning Release: Lightning Ball" rang out. It was Saori who, using Yohei's recent advance as cover, seized the opportunity to form hand seals and launch an attack. A lightning ball shot from her hand, hurtling towards Captain Yamaguchi with lightning speed.
Upon hearing the words "Lightning Release," Taiyi immediately withdrew, clearing the way for an attack to the left.
Just as the lightning ball was about to reach them, without Captain Yamaguchi forming any hand seals, he slammed his hand on the ground, and a thick earthen wall rose up, blocking the lightning ball's attack. It turned out to be an Earth Flow Wall; the speed of his spellcasting was truly remarkable.
But this was not the end. Yangping, who had just stepped forward to ask questions, completed his hand seals and launched an attack from the right: "Fire Release: Great Fireball Technique." A massive fireball hurtled towards Captain Yamaguchi, who was hiding behind the earthen wall. The enormous fireball engulfed the earthen wall along with it.
Captain Yamaguchi was forced to dodge to the left from behind the earthen wall, but Taiichi on the left had already finished charging up his power and was waiting for Captain Yamaguchi to dodge towards him, so he slashed out with his sword.
In the blink of an eye, Captain Yamaguchi raised his kunai to block the short sword. With a "clang," the short sword, which had been charging up for a long time, cut through the kunai as easily as cutting tofu, and also cleaved Captain Yamaguchi in two from his neck to his waist.
The entire arena fell silent. Even Taiyi was stunned. But with a "pop," a puff of white smoke rose, and the captain, severed in two, vanished into thin air. It turned out to be just a shadow clone.
The three of them snapped out of their daze and quickly moved closer together, forming a triangular defensive formation and warily watching their surroundings.
Not far away, behind a large tree, Yamaguchi Seisuke's true form was present. It turned out that the initial fight with Taichi and the other two was actually his shadow clone. Yamaguchi had witnessed everything. He was impressed by the incredible teamwork the three had displayed with just a glance; truly worthy of being among the most outstanding individuals of this generation.
With a blink of an eye, Yamaguchi Seisuke appeared in the arena. The three immediately adjusted their formation and looked at Captain Yamaguchi with wary expressions.
"Clap, clap, clap." Captain Yamaguchi clapped his hands and said to the three of them, "Very good, no need to be on guard anymore, you have passed this test."
The three of them were slightly taken aback upon hearing this, and then they all put away their weapons.
"You guys have a great teamwork. It's hard to believe you've only known each other for a short time. And both your strength and your determination in battle are commendable."
"Thank you for the compliment, Captain Yamaguchi!" x3
"Alright, I now declare Class 8 officially established." Captain Yamaguchi smiled as he looked at the three excited people, especially Yohei, who jumped up.
"Well then, to celebrate the formation of Class 8, I'll treat everyone to barbecue today!" Captain Yamaguchi said again, taking advantage of everyone's good mood.
"Yeah" x3
This time, even Taichi and Saori cheered.
The rays of the setting sun stretched the shadows of the four people—one large and three small—to meet in the distance, as if their fates were intertwined with this moment.
……
BBQ shop.
Looking at the table piled high with skewers, Captain Yamaguchi was exasperated, regretting his earlier boast about treating the three of them. He genuinely hadn't expected these three to be such big eaters. Two boys were one thing, but Saori, a girl, was just as capable as Taichi and Yohei. The three of them had eaten up his entire B-rank mission bonus in one meal. He checked his pockets, thankfully he'd brought enough money today, otherwise he would have been utterly humiliated.
"Alright, that's all for today. Everyone go back and get some rest. We'll meet at the Hokage Building at 9 a.m. tomorrow, and we'll officially start taking on missions then." Yamaguchi said impatiently, perhaps worried that the three of them hadn't eaten enough.
Upon hearing this, Taiyi and the other two also stood up, their bellies bulging. They had eaten so much that even walking was difficult.
……
Back home, Taiichi went about his daily training as usual—advanced physical techniques and advanced meditation. Seeing that these two skills were about to reach Lv1 with his daily efforts, Taiichi was full of energy. After finishing his daily training, Taiichi went to bed early to rest.
Lying in bed, Taiichi reflected on everything that had happened that day. Captain Yamaguchi Seisuke was an upright and serious person. Judging from today's assessment, his strength was among the best even among Jonin. He was rough around the edges but meticulous, and he knew how to care for his subordinates. He would be a good captain.
As for his two teammates, Taiyi was very satisfied with them. Putting aside their strength, they were also very intelligent. They could understand each other with just a glance. With such teammates, one would have a better chance of winning on the battlefield.
Thinking about his ninja career officially starting tomorrow, Taiichi couldn't help but feel excited. However, the thought that newly graduated genin could only perform D-rank missions at first—meaning harmless tasks like catching cats and dogs or cleaning up trash—made him feel a little bored. Then he remembered Captain Yamaguchi using Shadow Clone Jutsu to fight them during the day. If he could also use Shadow Clone Jutsu, he could do the same things. He thought he should try to find an opportunity to have Captain Yamaguchi teach him the Shadow Clone Jutsu, since teaching newly promoted genin was also the responsibility of a jonin leading a team.
Thinking about this, Taiichi slowly drifted off to sleep.
