Chapter 278: Eyes of the Deep Sea
Chapter 278: Eyes of the Deep Sea
After the Ember Realm regained its balance, the Guardians' ships took to the skies once more. The coordinates on the star map rapidly updated, pointing to the next gathering point of rift energy—"The Eye of the Deep Sea." The name of this dimension itself carried an air of mystery, and the observers' descriptions of it were even more unsettling.
"The Eye of the Deep Sea is a dimension completely covered by ocean." The observer's voice echoed in the spaceship. "At its center lies a massive energy eye, upon which all life forms in the dimension depend for their energy cycle to survive. However, according to the latest scans from the star map, this dimension's energy cycle has been eroded by fissures, and the deep-sea ecosystem is rapidly collapsing."
"Another trick of the Rift." Wagner frowned, slung his battle axe over his shoulder. "Will these things ever end?"
“They are driven by destruction, and as long as rules exist, they will continue to try to overthrow them,” Ares replied, his gaze fixed on the runic sword, its blade shimmering slightly as if responding to the call of the deep sea.
Selena quickly analyzed the data on the star map, her tone more cautious than before: "According to the star map, the core area of the Eye of the Deep Sea is experiencing intense energy fluctuations. The power of the rift may have already merged into the core of the dimension; this mission will definitely not be easy."
“The sooner we act, the better,” Ares said firmly. “If the energy cycle of the Eye of the Deep Sea completely collapses, the entire dimension will be reduced to nothingness.”
The three adjusted their equipment, and the spaceship accelerated towards the target area. Through the porthole, they gradually saw an endless blue ocean, its surface shimmering with faint light, as if telling them of the despair of this dimension.
The guardians donned their special diving gear and prepared to enter the core area of the Eye of the Deep Sea. Their target was the "Eye of Energy"—a colossal sphere of light located deep within dimensions. Originally a source of dimensional energy, it had now become a nest of rift energy.
“All instruments are functioning normally.” Selena adjusted the equipment on her diving helmet, her voice coming through the communicator, “Visibility in the deep sea is very low, we must be careful of interference from fissure energy.”
Ares gripped the rune sword tightly, his gaze resolute. "We have no way out. Everything here depends on us."
The three dived into the ocean, the surrounding light gradually swallowed by the deep blue of the water. As they went deeper, the temperature of the seawater dropped rapidly, even exceeding normal physical limits.
“It’s too cold in here.” Wagner frowned. Despite the insulating properties of his armor, he could still feel the bone-chilling cold. “It’s not just the temperature of the seawater; it’s the energy effect of the rift.”
“The Eye of Energy is being contaminated.” Selena examined the scanner in her hand, her voice filled with anxiety. “We need to speed things up.”
As they continued their descent, the surrounding ocean landscape grew even more bizarre. The deep sea, which should have been teeming with life, was utterly deserted, with only broken corals and fossilized fish scattered across the seabed. In the distance, dark purple fissures of energy floated in the currents, like hunting ghosts.
Just as they approached the Eye of Energy, a group of Rift Mutants suddenly emerged from the darkness. These creatures were extremely distorted, resembling deep-sea creatures corrupted by Rift energy. Their bodies were translucent, shimmering with a purplish-blue light, and their eyes burned with eerie blue flames.
"Enemy attack!" Selena fired quickly, her energy blasts hitting the core of a mutant precisely, but the monster merely twisted its body before continuing its charge towards her.
“Their cores are small and hidden deep!” Selena shouted, quickly adjusting her firing rate while dodging enemy attacks.
Wagner swung his battle axe, cleaving a mutant creature in two, but he soon discovered that the broken pieces of the body were reassembled, becoming even larger and more ferocious.
"Won't these things die?" Wagner roared, swinging his battle axe again, but he realized that ordinary attacks wouldn't stop them at all.
Ares raised the rune sword, its blade emitting a blazing light. He discovered that the cores of these variants were directly connected to the vortex of rift energy; they could not be completely defeated unless their connection to the energy source was severed.
"Disrupt their connection to the energy source!" Ares shouted, unleashing a blade of light from his rune sword that severed the connection lines of several mutants. The monsters immediately lost their ability to move, and their bodies began to disintegrate.
"Aim at their connection points!" Selena fired quickly, accurately hitting the connection points of several mutants with her sniper rifle, successfully eliminating them completely.
With the cooperation of the three, these deep-sea mutants were finally cleared away, and the seawater returned to calm for a moment.
After dealing with the Rift Variant, the three continued their approach to the Eye of Energy. When they passed through the final barrier of water currents, the sight before them astonished them.
The Eye of Energy was originally a dazzling sphere of light, radiating a warm golden glow. But now, it has been eroded by the purplish-blue energy of the rift, almost obscuring its original appearance. Cracks have spread all around the sphere, and the intense energy fluctuations have caused the surrounding water to distort violently.
“It’s completely corrupted.” Selena’s voice carried a hint of despair. “If we can’t purify it, this dimension is utterly doomed.”
“We can do it.” Ares gripped the rune sword, his eyes burning with determination. “But first, we have to deal with the core of the rift.”
At the center of the Eye of Energy floats a colossal rift core. Its shape resembles a twisted heart, and with each pulsation, it spreads rift energy to the surrounding spheres of light. Surrounding the core are several powerful guardians—their forms resemble enormous deep-sea monsters, radiating a suffocating chill.
The Rift Guardians let out a piercing shriek and launched a fierce attack on the three. They were incredibly fast, and each swing of their massive tentacles carried a terrifying impact.
Wagner charged forward first, his battle axe slashing down on a guard, knocking him back several meters. But the guard was barely harmed and quickly lunged at Wagner again.
"Their defenses are too strong!" Wagner shouted through gritted teeth. Although his battle axe was powerful and heavy, it was difficult to penetrate the guards' shells.
Selena quickly adjusted her tactics, discovering that while the guards' shells were tough, their eyes were their only weak point. She aimed her sniper rifle at one guard's eye and successfully hit it, instantly paralyzing it.
"Attack their eyes!" Selena warned.
Ares unleashed a powerful blade of light from his runeblade, slashing precisely at the eye of a guard. The guard let out a piercing scream, his body disintegrating into fragments and vanishing.
With the combined efforts of the three, the Rift Guardians were defeated one by one, and the Rift Core of the Eye of Energy was exposed to them.
“Now it’s the final step!” Ares shouted, raising his rune sword, pouring all his power into it, and thrusting it into the core of the rift.
As the runic sword pierced the core of the rift, a blazing light erupted from the eye of energy, dispelling all the rift's energy. The sphere of light regained its golden radiance, and the surrounding seawater became warm and bright.
"It's a success!" Selena looked at the scene before her and smiled a long-lost smile.
Wagner breathed a sigh of relief and slung his battle axe over his shoulder. "This battle was more difficult than we expected, but at least we made it."
Ares gazed at the Eye of Energy, feeling the resonance of the runeblade. He whispered, "The threat of the Rift is not over yet; we must move forward."
