Chapter 16, 3-day deadline, Asuma and I are good friends, Jiraiya was tricked!
Chapter 16, 3-day deadline, Asuma and I are good friends, Jiraiya was tricked!
"This man is the thief who stole the vault!" Shen Yue said calmly.
"Still spouting nonsense!" General Black Charcoal stepped forward, pointing at the thief on the ground. "This man was clearly injured and captured by you. Perhaps you've just found a petty thief to fill the gap! My lord, how could such a lowly character possibly bypass layers of guards and quietly transfer such a huge sum of money from the treasury?"
As he spoke, he looked at the lord and said in a firm and resolute voice, "I swear on my life that with me here, I will not allow anyone to deceive our lord!"
Upon hearing this, the daimyo of the Land of Fire gently stroked the ring on his hand, but remained silent.
Di Lu frowned slightly, scrutinizing Shen Yue with piercing eyes.
He had been practicing Buddhism for many years and believed he had an extremely accurate eye for people.
The Uchiha boy in front of me had clear and firm eyes; he didn't seem to be lying.
But that Utagawa Nobunaga, no matter how you look at it, doesn't seem like someone who could infiltrate a daimyo's treasury.
Qingshui couldn't help but lower his voice and whisper to Tieshu, "What's the captain up to? This thief may be skilled, but to break through the daimyo's mansion's guards three times and steal such a large amount of money, that's probably not something an ordinary ninja could do!"
"Shh, keep quiet!" Tie Shu quietly covered his mouth, but his eyes were fixed on Shen Yue's back. "Since the captain said that, he must have his reasons."
Just then, Shenyue suddenly smiled.
The sound was soft, yet it reached everyone's ears clearly.
"General Kurozumi is right," Shingetsu nodded, his tone flat. "This guy alone certainly couldn't have done it!"
General Kurotan was taken aback, not expecting that Shingetsu would agree with him.
"So!" Shen Yue changed the subject, her gaze sweeping over everyone in the hall: "I'm talking about one of the thieves."
"You mean, there are accomplices?" Di Lu, who had been silent all along, finally spoke.
"Of course!" Shen Yue said, holding up three fingers. "According to my speculation, at least three forces were involved in this case: those who infiltrated to commit the theft, those who provided internal support, and those who were responsible for selling and transporting the stolen goods."
These words were spoken.
The main hall was deathly silent.
The daimyo of the Land of Fire slightly raised his eyelids, a glint of shrewdness flashing in his eyes.
"Nonsense! The samurai in the manor are all loyal to the daimyo; how could they possibly steal from the treasury?"
"How dare you insult us? Do you want to start a war?" General Black Charcoal was agitated, gripping the hilt of his sword, ready to draw it.
"Let him continue!" the daimyo of the Land of Fire suddenly said.
Shen Yue's eyes flickered, and she gave General Hei Tan a cold glance.
"Unless someone had known the guards' shift change time, the structure of the vault's locks, or even secretly damaged part of the security perimeter, it would have been impossible for an outside thief to succeed three times without leaving a trace."
Although he hadn't been to the vault yet, he could tell something was amiss just from the mission briefing Fugaku had given him. If it were a trivial matter, why would the Daimyo of the Land of Fire let the Konoha Police Force handle it?
"Insolence!" General Kurotan roared, "Are you implying that the guards of my daimyo's residence are disloyal?!"
"Lord Daimyo, we are utterly loyal to you, and we beg you to see the truth!" As he spoke, he turned to face the Daimyo of the Land of Fire and knelt on one knee.
"I wasn't talking about you, General, why are you so quick to assume it's about you?" Shen Yue smiled. "I was merely stating a fact!"
As he spoke, he turned to Daming and said in a clear voice, "Within three days, I will find all those involved in the case."
"Alright, I'll give you three days!" The daimyo of the Land of Fire nodded.
"We'll definitely find the real thief within three days, but...!" Shen Yue changed the subject, looking at Ji Riku: "I need manpower to assist me."
"Alright, then let Jiraiya assist you!" The daimyo of the Land of Fire readily agreed to Shingetsu's request.
"It's me?" Di Lu was slightly taken aback.
However, since the daimyo of the Land of Fire had spoken, he could not refuse. He immediately put his hands together, bowed, and said, "This humble monk cannot refuse."
"Alright!" The Fire Country Daimyo stood up abruptly. "Kamizuki and Jiraiya, you two will join forces to investigate this case. The three-day deadline begins now!"
"Yes, sir!" Di Lu respectfully clasped his hands together.
Shen Yue nodded and, together with Qing Shui and Tie Shu, headed to the vault.
On the way, Di Lu looked solemn, glancing at Shen Yue from time to time, as if he wanted to say something but hesitated.
Finally, he couldn't help but ask.
"May I ask, young man from the Uchiha clan, why have you chosen to investigate this case with me?"
Shenyue seemed to have anticipated that Dilu would ask this question.
Instead of answering immediately, he reached into the ninja tool pouch on his lap and rummaged around for a while before finally pulling out a strange weapon and waving it in front of Jiraiya.
The originally solemn-looking Di Lu's expression changed drastically upon seeing this weapon, and he couldn't help but blurt out.
"How did Asuma's fist blade end up in your hands?"
"Asuma has very few good friends in the village, and I am one of his few close friends. He knew I was here to investigate the case, so he specially gave me this weapon, saying that I could seek help from Senior Jiraiya later!" Shen Yue said calmly, his tone unhurried, and his lie sounded perfectly natural.
"I didn't expect you to be good friends with Asuma. In that case, don't stand on ceremony. I will do my best to help you complete this mission!" Jiriku was completely reassured by Shingetsu's words.
"Wait, the captain and Asuma are good friends?"
"Isn't the captain ashamed to lie now?" Qing Shui, Tie Shu, and Shen Yue were all dumbfounded when they heard Shen Yue's words.
They had seen with their own eyes how Shingetsu punished Asuma.
If we consider Shingetsu to be a friend of Asuma...
Then the entire ninja world would probably be filled with Asuma's beloved family and friends!
For the rest of the journey, Di Lu clearly lowered his guard against Shen Yue.
He told Shenyue everything he knew.
He even named several people he suspected.
There were guards watching over the warehouse and guards at the gate.
This also includes General Black Charcoal, who was in charge of guarding the entire mansion.
Shen Yue silently noted down the names of the people that Di Lu had mentioned.
Half an hour later, Shenyue, Dilu, Qingshui, and Tieshu appeared outside the treasury of Daming Prefecture.
Contrary to the imagined scene of heavy security and a somber atmosphere, the vault was surrounded by guards, yet there was an eerie liveliness about it.
The craftsman is replacing the locks with brand new ones, and the foreman is shouting out the dimensions.
The captain of the guard was reprimanding his men, telling them to keep their eyes wide open.
Several people who looked like accountants were carrying account books in and out, their faces pale.
"After the third theft, this place has been completely overhauled," Di Lu explained in a low voice. "All the locks have been replaced, all the guards have been replaced, and everyone who has had contact with the vault is being investigated."
Shen Yue nodded, but her gaze fell on the heavy door of the vault.
The door was new, the lock was new, and even the threshold looked like it had just been polished.
But Shenyue walked closer, squatted down, and gently ran her fingertips along the seam between the door frame and the ground.
"What did you figure out?" Di Lu asked.
"It's too clean." Shen Yue stood up.
