Chapter 4 Cleaning the 5th Floor
Chapter 4 Cleaning the 5th Floor
Once the plan was finalized, Lu Chen got to work.
First, as before, arm Aunt Wang, whom we just subdued.
He returned to his room and began searching for a suitable weapon.
The kitchen knife has already been given to Dazhuang, and there's only a fruit knife left in the house. That thing is too short; it's better to let the zombies use their claws instead.
Lu Chen walked around the room, his gaze finally settling on the bed in the bedroom.
He bought that bed from a furniture store; it had a solid wood frame and two headboard posts as thick as an arm.
It's it!
Lu Chen found some tools on the balcony and spent a few minutes removing one of the bedposts.
After taking it apart, he could see clearly that it was a round wooden stick nearly two meters long, heavy in his hand, weighing at least thirty or forty pounds.
He tried waving it around, but let alone using it as a weapon, his arm would ache after just holding it for a few minutes.
For a normal adult to try to use this as a weapon is simply making things difficult for themselves.
But zombies are different.
Lu Chen handed the round wooden stick to Aunt Wang, whose grayish-white fingers gripped the stick and lifted it up effortlessly.
He ordered the other man to swing the wooden stick a few times, and the stick whistled through the air.
The weight of thirty or forty pounds is perfectly usable for a zombie whose strength surpasses that of an adult male. Coupled with its tireless nature, it can keep swinging this thing indefinitely.
"Not bad." Lu Chen nodded in satisfaction. "Although it can't compare to a kitchen knife, it's long enough and has a wide attack range."
After arming himself, he stood between two zombies.
Dazhuang was on the left, holding a kitchen knife, while Aunt Wang was on the right, carrying a round wooden stick.
Two zombies sandwiched him between them, one in front and one behind, like two silent bodyguards.
Lu Chen took a deep breath.
Three days have passed since the apocalypse began, and this is the first time he has actually stepped out of his room.
The doorknob turned, and the door opened.
The corridor was quiet. The motion-activated lights overhead were out of power. Only the sunlight streaming in from the window at the end of the corridor cast patches of light and shadow on the floor.
Lu Chen looked around and, after confirming that there were no wandering zombies in the corridor, turned his gaze to the next room.
He lives in apartment 501. What he needs to do next is simple: pry open the doors of all the apartments on this floor and subdue all the zombies inside.
Let's start with 502!
He walked to the door of 502 and knocked twice on the door.
Boom!Boom!
The knocking was particularly clear in the quiet corridor. Lu Chen immediately pressed his ear to the door and held his breath.
A faint sound came from behind the door, followed by the distinctive hoarse sound of zombies. Moreover, there was more than one sound source; two sounds overlapped.
He didn't rush to a conclusion, but knocked twice more and continued listening.
After listening for about a minute, Lu Chen straightened up.
"There should be two."
This number is a bit tricky.
He only has two zombies now, and although they are both equipped with weapons, who knows how the fight will turn out if it really starts.
If things go wrong, all the savings you've worked so hard to accumulate will be gone.
Lu Chen thought about it and decided to play it safe.
He retreated to room 501, closed the door, then switched control modes and possessed Dazhuang's body.
Shift in perspective.
Lu Chen controlled Da Zhuang to pull out a crowbar from his waist. This was a tool he had prepared in advance, a flat iron bar that had been removed from the clothes rack on the balcony.
Insert the flat end of the crowbar into the gap between the 502 glue and the door, wedging it in place.
Then break it with force.
The zombies' strength was indeed beyond that of humans; a piercing metallic clanging sound came from the door lock.
With just a couple of twists, a muffled "bang" was heard, and the latch was forcibly pulled out of the door frame.
The door opened!
The two zombies behind the door had already gathered in the entrance hall, and they tried to pounce out the moment they heard the noise.
But when they saw one of their own kind standing at the door, their attack immediately stopped.
Two zombies stood in the entrance hall, their grayish-white eyes staring at Da Zhuang for a few seconds, as if trying to confirm something.
Then their gaze lost focus and returned to its aimless state.
Looking at the two zombies through Da Zhuang's eyes, Lu Chen quickly recognized the young couple.
The other party has been living here for more than half a year, and they will nod and say hello when they run into each other.
Now they've all turned into zombies.
Seeing an acquaintance turn into a zombie, Lu Chen felt a pang of emotion, but he only held onto this feeling for a moment before quickly suppressing it.
He controlled Dazhuang to pull out a nylon rope from his waist and walk towards the nearest male zombie.
As soon as the rope was looped around the other man's wrist, the male zombie began to struggle. It let out a low growl and twisted its body violently, trying to break free.
At the same time, the female zombie next to him also moved. It pounced directly on Da Zhuang and opened its mouth to bite.
Lu Chen immediately gave the order, and Aunt Wang, who was standing to the side, quickly took action.
The wooden stick was swung up, whistling through the air, and smashed solidly into the female zombie.
The blow was quite powerful; the female zombie was sent flying, crashing into the shoe cabinet in the entryway with a dull thud.
But it quickly got back up.
Zombies don't feel pain, so the blow only knocked it back a few steps and didn't cause much damage.
However, those few seconds gained were enough.
Dazhuang's strength is among the best of ordinary zombies. Lu Chen controlled it and quickly tied the male zombie's wrists tightly with nylon rope.
Then they pulled another piece of rope and tied the other person's feet as well.
The male zombie lay on the ground, writhing like a dehydrated fish, but it was unable to break free.
Then there was the female zombie.
Aunt Wang swung her wooden stick again, this time hitting her leg. The stick swept across her knee, causing the female zombie to sway and lose her balance, falling to the ground.
Lu Chen controlled Da Zhuang to pounce on it, pressed down on its back with his knee, and quickly tied its hands and feet together.
Both zombies were subdued.
After confirming that he was safe, Lu Chen released the possession and walked out of room 501.
He walked into the entrance hall of 502, squatted down, and placed his hands on the male zombie's body.
Ten seconds later, control was complete.
Then came the female zombie, and another ten seconds passed.
Lu Chen straightened up, moved his wrists, and controlled two zombies in succession. About one-fifth of his superpower was used up, which was not a big deal.
He glanced at the four zombies standing quietly, and couldn't help but smirk.
"good."
My confidence immediately returned.
He was a little scared when there were only two zombies, but now that there are twice as many, there shouldn't be anything that can threaten him on this floor.
Lu Chen didn't rush to the next place, but first checked room 502.
This is a two-bedroom apartment, with a layout similar to his 501.
Half-eaten snacks were still on the coffee table in the living room, and a pot of porridge that had already gone bad was on the stove in the kitchen.
He opened the refrigerator and looked inside. The vegetables in the refrigerator compartment had already started to rot, but the meat and frozen food in the freezer compartment were still edible. There were two bags of rice and a box of instant noodles piled up in the corner of the kitchen, and several bottles of cooking oil and various seasonings in the cabinet.
This couple had obviously also stockpiled supplies during the seven days following the arrival of the red moon, and they had stockpiled even more than he had.
Lu Chen didn't rush to move his things, because there was no need.
Once all the zombies on this floor are cleared out, and two more zombies are sent to guard the fire escape stairwell, this entire floor will be his.
The items are left where they are; you can come and get them whenever you need them.
He exited 502, closed the broken door behind him, and then hurried toward 503.
503 is next to 502 and is the last unit on the east side.
As before, he knocked on the door first to listen for any response.
dong dong!
I pressed my ear against the door and waited for a while.
There were no footsteps, no hoarse sounds, nothing at all.
"Huh, nobody's here?" Lu Chen was a little surprised.
But thinking about it carefully, it's not surprising. The apocalypse broke out at 7 a.m., which isn't early, but for people with long commutes, they would already be out catching the subway.
He didn't have a strong impression of the resident of 503, but he thought it was a programmer who worked in the development zone and left home before seven o'clock every day.
If the other person was already on the subway at the time, they're now either a zombie wandering outside, or...
Lu Chen didn't continue thinking about it.
However, being cautious, he didn't open the door carelessly just because no one answered. Instead, he stuck the crowbar into the crack in the door as usual, then had four zombies stand in front of him and ordered Dazhuang to pry open the door.
boom!boom!
Two muffled thuds were heard, and the door lock was pried open.
The door was pushed open, and four zombies rushed in first.
Lu Chen stood at the door for a few seconds, and only after confirming that there was no unusual movement did he step into the room.
This was a one-bedroom apartment, much smaller than his. The four zombies had opened all the doors; the bedroom, bathroom, and kitchen were all empty.
As expected, there were no zombies.
At this point, the search of the three households on the east side has been completed.
