Chapter 26 Free Divination
Chapter 26 Free Divination
After watching the performance, Lorne followed the crowd out of the performance tent.
"Sir, would you like your fortune told?"
Upon hearing this, Lorne turned his head and saw a person wearing a black robe standing in front of a low tent. Judging from the figure, it was a woman.
She wore a gray-white mask and hid alone in the darkness, looking somewhat eerie.
"No need." Seeing her strange attire, Lorne had no intention of communicating with her and quickened his pace, intending to leave immediately.
"Why don't you give it a try? My divination is really accurate." Seeing that Lorne refused, the woman tried to persuade him to stay.
"Very accurate?" Lorne became somewhat interested.
"How much?"
"You're our first customer today, so it's free," the woman replied with a light laugh, her tone very friendly.
"Free." Lorne chewed on the word.
To be fair, if it were money, he wouldn't have given it much thought.
But the fact that it was free, coupled with the woman's strange attire, made him think about it more.
"No conditions attached, just divination?" he asked, somewhat uneasy.
After all, Russell... well, as the saying goes, the free stuff is always the most expensive.
"That's right!" the woman nodded.
"My tarot readings are very accurate," she said confidently.
"I can do tarot card readings myself..." Lorne looked her over for a few moments and asked, "Do you know dream divination?"
"Dream divination..." the woman murmured to herself.
"It seems you are not entirely ignorant of divination, sir!"
"Yes, I'm somewhat of a fan of the occult myself." Lorne nodded, confirming the other person's guess.
Compared to the well-known tarot card readings, dream divination is far less well-known. Those who are familiar with this method are usually people with a basic understanding of occultism.
Lorne asked the other party this question partly to test her skills. If she didn't even know about dream divination, she certainly wasn't a qualified diviner.
On the other hand, Lorne also wanted to use divination to confirm the origin of the notebook in his bag, but unfortunately, he himself did not know how to perform dream divination.
If the female fortune teller in front of him is truly skilled, perhaps she can help him divine what this so-called "Antigonus" really is.
"Don't worry, sir. As a qualified fortune teller, I'm also very skilled at dream divination."
Hearing the other person's confident tone, Lorne nodded, but then he suddenly realized something.
In the previous sentence, the other person referred to themselves as a fortune teller, not a diviner. This reminded Lorne of a potion recipe that had appeared in the notebook before, in which the Sequence 9 potion was named "The Fortune Teller."
"Could it be..." Lorne raised his head and scrutinized the other person with barely perceptible eyes.
He originally wanted to activate his spiritual vision to directly examine the other person's aura, but when he thought that the other person might also be an extraordinary being and might be detected by her, he gave up the idea.
After all, misunderstandings would be troublesome. Knowing how convenient divination was, Lorne understood that having an enemy skilled in divination would be a very troublesome matter.
"If you need a divination, come in with me." The woman waved to Lorne.
Lorne followed behind the woman, bending low and stooping as he entered the low tent.
The tent was unusually dark, with only a few candlelights seeping in, vaguely illuminating a table and two chairs placed against it.
"What do you want to know?" She sat down in one of the chairs and waved for Lorne to sit down.
"Well, I'm a history enthusiast myself. Some time ago, I accidentally acquired an ancient book, but due to its age, I haven't been able to decipher its contents. I'd like to know the origin and history of that ancient book." Lorne said, half-jokingly, as he sat down in his chair.
"Ancient books?" The woman's voice sounded somewhat puzzled.
"Did you bring it with you?"
"Of course not, who would carry a book with them?" Lorne lied without batting an eye.
The notebook was actually in his satchel.
"Without the physical object, the divination may not be very accurate." Her speech slowed down, and she lost her previous confidence.
"It's nothing, I just wanted to give it a try." Lorne didn't have high expectations for the free fortune telling.
"Alright, I'll give it a try." The woman nodded, agreeing to the divination request.
The woman then asked Lorne some questions, such as the color of the ancient book's cover, the location of the event in which it was purchased, and so on.
"Do you need me to leave for a moment?" Lorne recalled his experience at the fortune-telling club, where a fortune teller named Haynes had asked him to leave and be alone for a while when he was doing a dream reading.
"No need, just stay quiet." The woman opposite rejected Lorne's suggestion and instead bent down and buried her head in her arms.
This is... they've started divination right away... Lorne was a little surprised by the other person's actions.
……
...
Time passed by, minute by minute.
Seeing that the woman opposite him still did not react, Lorne's expression became somewhat uncertain.
Did she figure out that the notebook was on me...?
If the other party really is a fortune teller, then that notebook containing the fortune teller's subsequent potion recipes would definitely be a great temptation for her.
At this point, Lorne was already starting to regret his decision. Having a potential diviner divine items related to the diviner's path was hardly a reasonable one.
He made up his mind that if the woman opposite him did anything wrong, he would run away immediately.
About five more minutes passed.
This is way too long! Last time I had a dream reading at a divination club, I only waited at the door for two minutes, although the reading ultimately failed.
He wanted to ask a question, but when he remembered that the other person had told him to keep quiet, he swallowed the words that were on the tip of his tongue and just frowned slightly as he looked at the other person.
……
Another ten minutes or so passed.
Nearly 20 minutes have passed since the other person started the divination, but they still haven't reacted at all.
Lorne asked anxiously, "Madam, what were the results of the divination?"
"If you fail, don't try to be brave, just tell me directly."
Seeing that the other party did not react, Lorne was a little puzzled.
Dream divination, dream divination, could I really have fallen asleep?
"Lady? Lady?"
"Wake up!" He reached out and nudged the fortune teller.
Lorne's exertion seemed to have directly broken the balance of forces, causing the other person to sway and fall off the chair.
"Ouch...it hurts so much. What happened?"
"And who are you?" she asked Lorne, looking at him blankly.
"I... I'm here to have my fortune told."
"You forgot so quickly?" Lorne was speechless at the other person's behavior; it looked like he was still half asleep.
"Really? It seems like that's the case."
Do you still want your fortune told?
"No...no need." Seeing how unreliable the other party's behavior was, Lorne gave up the idea of divination and turned to leave the tent.
However, what he didn't expect was that a dishonest person had already noticed him.
……
……
"How's today? Did the potion digest smoothly?" the magician asked the team members.
"..."
Seeing her pale face, the magician's expression changed, and he asked with concern, "What happened?"
"I..." the fortune teller hesitated before speaking, "I think I had a terrible dream."
