Chapter 23 Draco, who says one thing but means another
Draco Malfoy was born into the powerful Malfoy family.
During the time of Varian, his father Lucius Malfoy was a powerful figure. After Varian's downfall, he maintained the dignity of the pure-blood noble family with his extraordinary financial power and smooth methods. Compared to other pure-blood families that were purged or even completely ruined for choosing the wrong side, Malfoy still held a pivotal position in the Ministry of Magic.
Narcissa Malfoy, Malfoy's mother, was a Black before her marriage. The Black family is an older and more noble wizarding family than the Malfoys, with a history that can even be traced back to the Middle Ages.
As a descendant of these two powerful families, Draco was born with everything. Moreover, he was the only son of Lucius and Narcissa, and from a young age, he got whatever he wanted, thus receiving even more pampering and protection from his parents.
Compared to the next generation of heirs from other pure-blood families, Draco still retains a touch of naiveté, and his catchphrase is still: "I'm going to tell my dad!" He completely lacks the responsibility that a qualified heir should have.
His parents were well aware of this, but they didn't care too much: after all, no family in the pureblood circle dared to disrespect Malfoy, and no matter what trouble Draco caused, they were confident they could handle everything.
The Malfoy surname is the best passport in the wizarding world.
It's easy to imagine that Draco, growing up in such a family environment, was arrogant and conceited.
He didn't care about the children from ordinary wizarding families; they were all poor anyway, like the Weasleys.
He felt that the wizards of his age in the small family were not worthy of being mentioned in public and could only be his followers, such as Goyle and Crabbe.
Other young wizards from families that, while not as powerful as the Malfoys, still possessed considerable talent and, with their parents' permission, could barely maintain a family relationship. Draco, however, was only outwardly polite; inwardly, he didn't find any of them appealing: Daphne Greengrass was arrogant about her beauty, Pansy Parkinson was too infatuated, Theodore Nott was gloomy and taciturn, and Blaise Zabini was too picky.
If Draco had to choose one person as a friend, it would only be Blaise, because Blaise's pickiness is indiscriminate, even towards a Malfoy. Draco has experienced this countless times since childhood; Blaise would never fawn over Draco because of the Malfoy family's power—this makes Draco think highly of him: only equal interaction can be called friendship.
Besides, as picky as he was, Blaise was a quintessential Zabini. Like his stunningly beautiful and charming mother, Madame Zabini, Blaise not only possessed a handsome and captivating appearance, but also, if he so desired, was the most likable guy in the crowd: considerate, reliable, and gentle with girls.
Of course, the proud and aloof Draco, though secretly considering Blaise a friend, never openly admitted to having any special feelings for him. However, upon entering Hogwarts, the platinum-haired young master secretly pestered his father to use the power of the school board to arrange for the two to share a dormitory.
The observant Blaise, upon entering Slytherin, unsurprisingly discovered that his roommate was Draco Malfoy. This overly pampered young master thought he had hidden it well, but in reality, Blaise had long been aware of the fact that he had earned the honor of being Malfoy's only friend.
The platinum prince, who never holds back his words, will listen attentively to Blaise's opinions, no matter how impatient he may be; Draco will proudly share the candies made by Mrs. Malfoy with those around him, but the rarest candies will always be reserved for Blaise; at the ball held by the Malfoy family, Blaise is always the first among the young wizards of his age to receive an invitation.
Even the most discerning Blaise couldn't find anything wrong with this unspoken friendship.
Therefore, Blaise Zabini had implicitly accepted it as his responsibility to cover for this childish friend who would occasionally act capriciously and lose control.
“It seems Draco ate too much at the Halloween dinner and is already sleepy.” Seeing that Draco didn’t react, Blaise habitually picked up the conversation, which was also the most natural excuse for his absent-minded platinum roommate. “Today has been quite an unexpected day. Maybe we should go back to the dorm to rest early.”
"Hmph, Malfoy would never indulge in gluttony." After being subtly reminded by Blaise, Draco barely managed to regain his attention and promptly accepted the excuse offered by his roommate, "I'm just a little tired."
“But Draco looked so handsome today—” Pansy felt a sense of satisfaction thinking about how Draco had loudly reprimanded that Gryffindor Mudblood vase. “That Gryffindor Mudblood is just trying to attract attention because of his looks. Just wait and see, Mudbloods will be kicked out of the castle sooner or later!”
“But she’s really pretty, even a lot of the Slytherin boys secretly like Lyra White,” Daphne said with a half-smile, glancing at the boys in the group. “Don’t you think so, Blaise?”
“Oh, you know, my gaze only lingers on the real rose.” Blaise leaned back casually on the sofa, noticing his platinum-haired roommate stiffen for a few seconds. “Draco, what about you? Do you like her?”
"Brace, what nonsense are you talking about?" Pansy, who had always loved chasing after Draco since childhood, shouted indignantly, "Draco would never like a Mudblood!"
"The Malfoy family only accepts noble, pure-blooded individuals," Draco said, forced to state his position under Pansy's eager gaze.
But Draco felt inexplicably uncomfortable from the very beginning.
The supremacy of purebloods was a family principle he had been taught since childhood, but for some reason, when he answered Pansy, he couldn't help but recall the look of disgust in the eyes of the black-haired girl when he had just called her "Mudblood."
She's just a Mudblood, yet she dares to look at a Malfoy like that! And, and she attacked him first! That day on the pitch, when he was arguing with Gryffindor for the field, he only called Granger a Mudblood, but she was ungrateful and waved her wand at him!
It's one thing for him to hang out with those two red-haired monkeys all the time, but now he's even trying to get close to Potter!
Upon seeing Lyra White and the Potter trio standing in the middle of the corridor, seemingly in their own little world, Draco's mental string snapped instantly. Without thinking, he jumped out and shouted "Mudblood" at the dark-haired girl.
The platinum boy's expression grew increasingly gloomy as he thought about it, and he suddenly said, "I'm going back to rest now." Before anyone around him could react, he hurriedly left the Slytherin common room.
Fortunately, this small group was used to the Malfoy family's young master's willful and rude behavior and did not take it to heart.
Only Blaise glanced deeply at his platinum roommate's retreating figure before turning back and joining the conversation of the pure-blood clique with a normal expression.
