Chapter 308 - 316: Drifting Van

Chapter 308: Chapter 316: Drifting Van"There are two police cars and two private cars chasing us right now," Helen Wilson warned James Brown as she kept an eye on the vehicles behind them.

James Brown was maneuvering the police van. Although they couldn’t shake off the pursuing vehicles just yet, their pursuers couldn’t catch up either, providing Helen with a momentary relief. However, her brows were furrowed with worry—where could they run now, under these circumstances?

"By the way, can the person you contacted earlier help us?"

"Absolutely, just relax. As long as they don’t catch us now, we will be out of trouble soon."

Although Helen Wilson was skeptical of James Brown’s assurance, at that moment, she had no choice but to place her unconditional trust in him.

The van made a right turn at an intersection onto Y Street. James’ eyes were

James Brown nodded and said, "I know, it’s just a temporary delay. We’ll get off ahead."

Ahead at a small intersection, James Brown quickly steered the van into it, then turned into a narrow alley and finally braked to a stop.

The three of them quickly got off the car, but James Brown didn’t lead them forward; instead, he took them back a short distance, turning into a residential complex, winding so much that Helen Wilson and Emily Jenkins felt dizzy.

However, Helen understood that what James Brown did was very sensible. With the car parked there, it was natural to think of running forward, but they did exactly the opposite. Moreover, the route James followed avoided all the surveillance cameras on the road, making it impossible for even YODC City’s extensive surveillance system to locate them.

At this moment, William Armstrong was furious. His years-long smuggling syndicate had formed a very tight network, bringing him profits exceeding two hundred million annually. Of course, this money had to be used to greased palms, and about a hundred million was what usually remained.

William Armstrong was astute. To ensure sustainable income, he made sure those in charge and who could benefit him were well-compensated. Thus, he was never stingy when offering bribes up the chain, and his generosity extended to his subordinates’ bonuses. This ensured his stability in the industry, protected from above and loyally supported from below.

Any sign of trouble and he would be forewarned, allowing him to steer clear of danger. But this time, there was an undercover cop he only found out about after inquiries. It infuriated him to learn that it was a lone action by a police officer.

Angry as he was, he did not panic. Such a small-time cop was manageable with his vast network. Summoning anyone from his contacts would yield more influence than Helen Wilson, the precinct captain. He had already alerted his connections within the Public Security Bureau, who confirmed they would seal the issue swiftly. Moreover, the cyber police monitored the internet closely, ready to delete any relevant leaked information immediately.

Furthermore, his subordinates were actively hunting down Helen Wilson and James Brown. He couldn’t believe that a mere precinct captain and a young man could topple him.

William Armstrong was a veteran of many storms, proceeding with reason in all his operations. Now, feeling everything under his control, if he could capture Helen and James, he was determined to teach them the tragic consequences of crossing him.

However, the reports from his subordinates irked him; they had lost track of their targets. The police, too, reported temporarily losing them.

"I’ll dig three feet into the ground if necessary to find you," William Armstrong viciously smashed the ashtray onto the floor, a chilling gleam flashing in his eyes.

By now, James Brown, along with Helen Wilson and Emily Jenkins, had hidden away. They weren’t in bushes or any secluded spots, nor were they in any hotel, but had taken refuge in a newly-built residential complex.

This complex had just handed out keys a couple of months ago. Most residences were newly renovated, mostly unoccupied. The trio found an apartment, and James effortlessly opened the door. The interior wasn’t bad; it was one of the earlier completed renovations with flooring done, only missing furniture and appliances.

After looking around, James commented, "Not bad, there’s water, a toilet, no problem going to the bathroom, but no showers, and no beds. Looks like the three of us will be sleeping on the floor tonight."

Seeing James so relaxed, Emily too felt unbothered, even taking a moment to admire and comment on the apartment’s decor.

But Helen, at that moment, couldn’t feel as casual, asking, "James Brown, those things you passed on, can they really solve our current problem?"

"Of course, don’t worry. Did you and Emily turn off your cellphones, so no one can track our location?" he replied.

Helen was startled and quickly turned off her phone, Emily obediently did the same. Seeing James also turning off his, Helen frowned, "You turned off your phone too, what if that person looks for you?"

"It’s late; he can’t do anything now. Let’s just get a good night’s sleep and wait for news tomorrow morning," James laid down on the floor as he spoke.

Helen twitched her mouth and sat next to James, pushing his shoulder, "I’m just not feeling reassured. Who exactly is this person you’re counting on?"

James laughed, "My background is strong, even the mayor has to be polite when he sees me. Finding someone to easily handle this is no big deal."

Helen knew James wasn’t willing to reveal more, feeling slightly displeased inside. After all the personal interactions they’ve had, he still kept things from her.

Lucy Campbell kept a low profile in YODC City, currently only a few key city officials knew she was in town. Thus, James couldn’t just disclose Lucy’s identity. If it needed to be that public, James could easily call the mayor directly or just show up at Lucy’s, daring anyone to apprehend them.

Moreover, this was also a lesson for Helen, a righteous but somewhat naive cop. This experience should teach her that not everything can be approached with sheer enthusiasm, possibly making her a more tactful police officer in the future.

Naturally, Helen was unaware of James’s intentions, and at that moment, she was still sulking.
